Hemicyanine Langmuir-Blodgett Films by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Second Harmonic Generation

The molecular orientation in amphiphilic hemicyanine Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films has been studied quantitatively by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and second harmonic generation (SHG). From the analysis of transmission and reflection absorption (RA) spectra of FTIR, the tilt angles to the surface normal of the hydrocarbon chain axis and the chromophore of amphiphilic hemicyanine LB film were estimated to be 24' and 43O, respectively. The SHG measurements yielded a chromophore tilt angle of 44O. Both techniques have shown consistent results for the chromophore orientation in the hemicyanine LB film.
